Michael Greenfield's personal comments:
Here, in his own words, is some background and guitar making philosophy from Michael Greenfield
I started life as a vintage restorer, hence my love for
those old instruments. It was a great training ground, especially for
my ears. I started by making true copies (updated to my specs) of the
pre-war classics. Later in my career I ventured off into my own world
of design. The basic difference is as follows....American, classic
style guitars have a very open voice while my guitars, in the "Canadian"
style have a very focused and evenly balanced voice. My guitars are
best suited for contemporary fingerstylists. Having said all of
that...I offer 8 steel string body styles because it is a lot quicker
and more effective to match a guitar to a player than by "tweaking" one
or two body shapes to try and accommodate everyone. An OM will always
sound like and OM and a J-200 will never sound like an OM, a Dreadnaught
won't sound like a 00 and my G-2 (although similar in dimension to a
Dreadnaught) won't sound like a D-28. As mentioned earlier, I build
guitars for individuals. It's all about making music and this array of
body styles and bracing variations help me to match instruments to
players and then I can voice the guitar according to their needs,
playing style, string gauge, tunings, etc...
I tend to seek out "crazy" wood. There isn't a lot of it around, my suppliers know I'm always on the prowl for wild stuff and will pay and
so when a great log comes in, they call me. I own 15 sets of some insane
Ziricote drying for the last 3 years, I should get it this summer. It
will make my other stuff look like ply wood (not really)! I pay more
for it, lay it away for many years and have to maintain tens of
thousands of dollars in inventory and have to pass that expense to my
clients but having said that, I haven't built an East Indian rosewood
guitar in 3 years! Most who commission instruments with me want exotic
tone woods. It's all part of the fun of commissioning a hand made
instrument. You just can't get this look from other makers and
certainly not from production instruments.
