2008 Morgoth 'FGC Special' from GNG Fine Handmade Guitars
Recently elevated to status of Master Luthier in Italy, Giulio Negrini is completing a chambered electric for FGC. Giulio will make the trip to San Diego soon, hand delivering our new instrument. After much back and forth coversation, our collaboration with Giulio has been wonderfully productive. Giulio is creating a guitar that is half the weight of his usual Morgoth with very special woods. Linked here is a progress page of the maker on his site. Click on any slide to enlarge. From the Maker: "You asked me for a guitar that weighs under 3 Kilos, beautiful in look and sound, with great woods and tone. So I have chosen Spanish Cedar for the body and neck (same family as Honduras mahogany, but lighter in weight); - tone-chambered the body for less weight and a more refined tone; - selected the best quality quilted maple top, installed abalone purfling on the body and glued a really rare Royal White ebony fingerboard and pickups covers, for the best visual impact. Actually the body weighs 1,1kg. (about 2.2 lbs.) I think that the guitar assembled will weigth about 2,2 kg. (about 4.85 lbs.)" The guitar will be here late summer '08.

2008 David MacCubbin
Dave MacCubbin is relatively new on the scene. I first noticed his work when we met at the First World Guitar Congress at Towsend University in Maryland a few years ago. My intuition told me that this maker has what it takes to grow a career in lutherie. He has dedicated himself thoroughly, now full time, and I played his latest guitars at the 2008 Newport Guitar Festival in Miami Beach, Florida, and enjoyed each one. That did it. I invited him to make a Lucky 12 guitar for us. Here is an email that will tell you the basics. From David, "As we discussed in Miami, I plan to make you an OM style small jumbo soft cutaway, with Peruvian walnut back and sides, a Lucky 12 soundboard, and flamed Western Maple bindings. I plan to provide the same stylized spiral rosette (Indian Rosewood and Flamed Maple) as I had on the guitars in Miami, and complement the rosette and body with simple alternating black and white purfling lines. The headplate will be ebony with my ‘M’ logo, inlayed in MOP and centered at the top. The back of the headstock and the heel cap will be in bookmatched Peruvian Walnut. The back stripe and end graft will also be Flamed Maple with black and white purflings, blending in with the binding scheme. The fretboard and bridge will be ebony, with MOP microdots on the front of the fretboard and MOP side dots. Scale length will be 25.4 inches. Nut width will be 1 3/4 inches (unless you feel narrower is better?), and string spacing at the bridge will be 2 1/4 inches. The tuners will be Gold Waverly’s with ebony knobs. --P.S.--I just received my Peruvian walnut back/side set today, and it is more spectacular than the one I had in Miami!!" (Note from Richard: This is one of the coolest looking backs I have seen in some time. I heard a similar set in Miami on one of Dave's guitars and it rocked my boat. One of you will be in for an affordable surprise!)
